Azerbaijan has launched “anti-terrorist” operations in areas of Nagorno-Karabakh region remaining under ethnic-Armenian control, threatening to carry on “until the end”.
South Caucasus suffered from tensions for months around the breakaway enclave or Nagorno-Karabakh, recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan and Armenia last went to war three years ago, more than seven thousand soldiers and civilians were killed, with hundreds more Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers wounded.
Baku made clear the latest offensive would stop only with a surrender of the disputed territories.
“Illegal Armenian military formations” would have to raise the white flag, hand over all weapons and dissolve “the illegal regime”, the Azerbaijani presidency said in a statement.
