Michel early departure: blames for egoism

Brussels 09.01.2024 President of the European Council Charles Michel’s, 48,(pictured) announced his plans to run as a candidate for the European Parliament in the elections in May-June. This decision has evoked widespread criticism of the Euro-centrics pointing at his egoism and neglect of public interest.

Over the weekend, after the Xmas holidays Michel surprised many by declaring he would lead the list of the Reformist Movement party (MR) in Belgium, at the European elections in spring. If successful, which is almost certain, Michel would start as an MEP in mid-July, curbing his current mandate ending on 30 November 2024. The announcement has been widely criticized as a self-serving move distinctive of the former Belgian Prime Minister career.

Highly likely the mobile EU President has decided to follow his father’s footsteps: Louis Michel, who after being the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid from 2004 to 2009, has switched to the European Parliament as an MEP to keep high public profile and ensure visibility.
