Brussels 04.02.2024 The European Union and the United Kingdom hold their first ever Counterterrorism Dialogue in Brussels on 2 February. The Dialogue focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination in countering and preventing terrorism and violent extremism.
The EU and UK participants pointed at shared priorities in the global effort to counter terrorism and their assessment of the threat landscape domestically and globally. Discussions focused on strategic approaches to counterterrorism, underlining the importance of coordinated efforts in tackling terrorism and keeping in mind the value of cooperation within multilateral frameworks, particularly the Global Counterterrorism Forum, which the EU currently co-chairs.
Combating online terrorist content, the financing of terrorism, and restrictive measures targeting terrorism and violent extremism were key common priorities identified.
The next EU-UK Counterterrorism Dialogue will take place in London.
The EU was represented by European External Action Service (EEAS) Special Envoy for Counterterrorism Nadia Costantini, joined by Deputy Director General, Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, Olivier Onidi and the Office of the EU Counterterrorism Coordinator. Homeland Security Group and CONTEST Director Jonathan Emmett led the United Kingdom’s delegation.
