Brussels 30.03.2026 The co-leader of Germany’s far-right AfD party has called for the complete withdrawal of US troops from the country, saying Berlin must pursue a more independent foreign policy by 2029.

AfD co-leader, Tino Chrupalla, told a party gathering in east Germany on Saturday that the country should chase an “independent” foreign policy, starting with the removal of American soldiers.

Speaking at a party congress in the eastern German state of Saxony on Saturday, Tino Chrupalla urged Berlin to begin removing US forces, arguing that Germany should no longer be drawn into international conflicts and must chart a more independent foreign policy course.

“Let’s start implementing this,” he said, referring to the withdrawal of US troops.

Around 40,000 US troops remain stationed in Germany—America’s largest military presence in Europe and a legacy of the post-World War II era that now serves as a cornerstone of NATO’s collective defense against Russia.

Chrupalla pointed to Spain as a model where, under its socialist government, Madrid has opposed US and Israeli military action against Iran and restricted Washington’s use of Spanish bases for such operations.
The AfD’s party program also calls for the withdrawal of all allied troops and nuclear weapons from German soil.
US forces in Germany are concentrated mainly in the western and southern states, including the strategically important Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, a major hub for American operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

President Donald Trump reiterated his disappointment with NATO allies over their refusal to dispatch their military to secure the Strait of Hormuz. He said Washington may not help them in future, mirroring their decision to deline the U.S. request.

“They just weren’t there,” he said at an investment forum in Miami. “We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO, hundreds, protecting them, and we would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don’t have to be, do we?”

“Why would we be there for them if they’re not there for us? They weren’t there for us.”

Since the start of the US-Israeli offensive against Iran a month ago, Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration over Western allies’ lack of support and reluctance to commit forces to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key sea lane for Gulf oil and gas exports vulnerable to Iranian attacks.

Traffic through the narrow waterway has ground to a virtual standstill, leading to a surge in global energy prices.

Six key powers including Britain, France, Germany and Japan say they are ready to “contribute to appropriate efforts” but have not made any commitment.

Trump has reserved some of his toughest criticism for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Last week, he dubbed its other members “COWARDS,” and declared the alliance was a “paper tiger” without the United States.

On Thursday, he said on his Truth Social platform that the United States “needs nothing from NATO.”

“NATO nations have done absolutely nothing to help with the lunatic nation, now militarily decimated, of Iran.”

The United States and Israel attack on Iran has escalated into a regional crisis with global implications. The repeated assaults of the U.S. and Israel on Iranian targets, including civilian intrastructure since February 28 have caused retaliations plunging the entire region into havoc.
