Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Thursday, April 9, that he had instructed the Spanish Ambassador to Iran, Antonio Sanchez-Benedito, to return to Tehran and resume diplomatic activities after the embassy was temporarily closed on March 7, according to a report by El Pais.
Speaking upon arrival at the Spanish Congress, Albares said the decision reflected the “new situation” created by the two-week ceasefire.
The diplomat admitted that he had spoken to his counterpart from Iran, Abbas Araghchi, on Wednesday, April 8, to inform of this step. Albares also said this confirmed Madrid’s commitment to contributing to “peace efforts.”
The Spanish minister also held talks with a number of regional partners, including the foreign ministers of Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Lebanon.
In a conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi, he expressed Spain’s support in the face of what he described as Israel’s brutal and indiscriminate attacks on Lebanon. He even called the attack a disgrace to the conscience of all humanity.
When asked about a report in The Wall Street Journal that the US might consider closing military bases in countries that do not support its actions, including Spain and Germany, Albares said he had no information on the matter.
As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Albares stressed that bilateral communication with Washington regarding the use of the Rota and Morondi Andalusia air bases, southern Spain, was still ongoing and both facilities were operating normally.
Iran and the US announced a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, April 7, which aims to pave the way for a final agreement to end the war launched by Washington and Israel against Tehran since February 28, which has killed and injured many people.
This is a very tough post to be excited about..
President Trump says “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again”
Despite how some feel about this subject, I just want to remind everyone there are good people in Iran. “Whole civilization” means them… pic.twitter.com/HmR45L3GEb

The announcement came less than two hours before the deadline, which US President Donald Trump had repeatedly extended, for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept the deal or face “the destruction of the entire civilization.”
