Strasbourg 17.09.2024 Estonia’s ex-premier Kaja Kallas, daughter of the former EU Commissioner Siim Kallas was promoted to become a new head of the European diplomacy, taking over the job of Spanish Socialist Josep Borrell. Today the European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen unveiled in Strasbourg her new cabinet, or College, to manage the EU through the next five years. However the defence portfolio is divided between Kallas, and Lithuanian politician, also former prime-minister Andrius Kubilius.

The proposed candidates are united in creating “no-compromise to Russia” duo, indicating the taking over by hawks of the EU foreign policy. Both candidates are similar in belligerent rhetoric vis-a-vis Kremlin, which indicates further degradation of the semi-existent relations between the EU and Russia.

However this duo might have less criticism towards Israel. Unlike Socialist Josep Borrell, whose attitude was intensely pro-Palestinian, both Estonian Kallas, and Lithuanian Kubilius might be inclined to more tolerant, and balanced outlook, which certainly will represent a change.
