NATO: Rubio calls for 5% defense spending

Brussels 03.04.2025 During his fist visit to NATO Headquarters the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced America’s commitment to the Alliance, however pointed the necessity to “… committing and fulfilling a promise to reach up to 5 percent in spending. That includes the United States will have to increase its percentage”. Rubio visits Brussels for a meeting of NATO allies top diplomats, the conclusive ministerial event before the leaders convene in The Hague, The Netherlands, in Jun 24-25, 2025.

“…As we speak right now, the United States is as active in NATO as it has ever been. And some of this hysteria and hyperbole that I see in the global media and some domestic media in the United States about NATO is unwarranted. President Trump has made clear he supports NATO; we’re going to remain in NATO”, Rubio continued.

The top diplomats meeting has been extended to Indo-Pacific partners, which is one of the Alliance core policies expressed in strengthening dialogue and cooperation with Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand. Within the context of increasingly complex security environment, the relations with like-minded partners are increasingly significant for addressing security issues and global challenges, especially those imposed by China. The Indo-Pacific region is becoming paramount for the Alliance in the context of China’s Communist party assertiveness. Being military, and political Alliance NATO and its partners in the region share common values and a goal of assembling efforts to uphold the rules-based international order.
