Brussels 25.07.2025 The EU is hopeful to sign a trade deal with President Trump after the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that would meet him on Sunday, July 27, during his four-day trip to Scotland.
Trump landed tonight before the opening of his new golf course in Aberdeenshire and was planning to meet the UK Prime minister, Keir Starmer, on Monday July 28.
The European Commission said von der Leyen’s visit would be at Trump’s invitation.
Following a good call with @POTUS, we have agreed to meet in Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong.

Ireland’s taoiseach, Micheál Martin, said on Friday a deal would “hopefully be signed off before the weekend is over”. However at landing Trump said there are might be “20 disagreements” with the EU, he hinted to a journalist, asking the question, that there are too many to list them in this inpromtu format.
Nevertheless, he mentioned windmills, which kills birds, destroy nature, sea, ocean, and the beauty of the landscapes. The other topic which he touched briefly was the European migration. The President didn’t miss an oppurtunity to draw the attention of the press to zero illigal migrants crossing Mexican border, which was reported recently, and was undeniable success of his administration. He warned Europeans about the consequences of the illegal mass migration, and called to follow the U.S. example.
Before boarding an Air Force One flight to Glasgow, Trump said the EU had a “50/50” chance of the deal, but later added his teams were working “diligently” to land the “big one” with the bloc, seemingly hinting to moving away from the risks of a trade war. Trump also hinted that he was expecting for more concessions from the EU, exlaining that Japan had had a worse chance than Brussels of reaching a deal but succeeded after changing balance to the U.S. favour.

While Trump praised the Prime minister Starmer and Scotland’s First minister, John Swinney, he didn’t have a lot of compliments for the French president, Emmanuel Macron. Although the admitted that the Frenchman was “a team player”, he wasn’t carried away by France’s planned recognition of Palestine as a state, which would not “carry any weight”.
