Brussels 12.08.2025 Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not join the statement of the leaders of the European Union (EU) on the Ukrainian settlement. He made this announcement on his page on the social network X, formally Twitter.
The statement, published on the website of the European Commission, as well as the social page of the head of the institution, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the EU leaders supported Ukraine’s policy of European integration with the goal of joining the European Union.
“Hungary did not join this statement,” said Prime Minister Orban.
The statement of the European Commission does not specify which leaders supported the statement, which spoke out against it, and which refrained from commenting. It supports the efforts of US President Donald Trump to achieve a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, and also emphasizes that “the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without the participation of Ukraine.”
Prime Minister Orban not only refused to join this statement, but also sharply criticized it.
Just four days ahead of the historic summit between President Trump and President Putin, the European Council sought to issue a statement in the name of all EU heads of state and government.

Independence, and prinicpled position of the Hungarian leader has been a problem for the authoritian head of the European Commission for some time.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if Europe won’t negotiate directly with Russia, Moscow and Washington will strike a deal over our heads.
