Brussels 18.01.2026 Today, following president’s Trump’s intentions to impose tariffs on allies, opposing the takeover of Greenland, the European Union called an emergency meeting for 17:00 in Brussels (16:00 GMT) on Sunday. The meeting will involve ambassadors from the EU’s 27 countries.

In a statement online, Manfred Weber, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), wrote that the escalating U.S.-Europe tensions meant the European Parliament would not vote in favor of the pact, which sets U.S. tariffs on imports from the EU at 15 percent in exchange for the bloc not applying levies on American exports.
The EPP is in favour of the EU–U.S. trade deal, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage. The 0% tariffs on U.S. products must be put on hold. #EuropeanUnity

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the U.S. administration move was “completely wrong”, while French President Emmanuel Macron assessed it as “unacceptable”.
The comments came after Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland would come into force on 1 February, and could later rise to 25%, and would last until a deal on Greenland was reached.
President Trump insists the autonomous Danish territory is critical for U.S. security in a global competition with Russian, and China.
