Ursula: German CDU/CSU losing patience

Brussels 27.04.2026 The conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) intends to demand that European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen (pictured) weaken EU regulations in the form of an ultimatum. Otherwise, they may seek to reduce the EC’s powers, Politico newspaper reported, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the EC president, as a member of the CDU, was believed to be close to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the issue of EU reform. However, pressure on her from Berlin shows that “the Commission’s supposed German allies are losing patience with what they perceive as the too slow pace of reforms.”

Nowadays members of parliament are proposing the creation of a new supervisory body to oversee the EC’s activities. An alternative to this initiative would be to expand the powers of the so-called Regulatory Review Council. However both reform options would require changes to the EC’s statutory documents.

In March, Euractiv reported that EU countries were criticizing von der Leyen’s fast-track approach to decision-making. It noted that several of the EC President’s initiatives, such as Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU or the confiscation of Russian assets, had not been implemented, despite expectations of concrete results. The portal also noted that von der Leyen was displaying an overly rigid leadership style and was attempting to expand the powers of the European Commission.
