Trump revives Greenland ambition

Ankara 07.07.2026 President Donald Trump said that Greenland should be under the United States powers, not Denmark, reaffirming a stance that has previously caused tensions among ‌NATO allies. The remarks about “controlling” Greenland were made shortly after arrival to the Turkish presidential palace in Ankara, where the Alliance leaders gathered for a summit.

Trump’s assertions that the U.S. must acquire powwer over Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, have long strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen — both founding NATO members — and more broadly U.S. ties with Europe. The issue has been channeled to diplomatic format, until president Trump raised it in Ankara.

Donald Trump has reanimated his intnetions to buy Greenland, according to officials close to the discussions, the Telegraph writes. A deal to purchase the territory is now the US president’s preferred option to end a long-running dispute with Denmark. The new position would represent a collapse in talks between the two countries regarding enhanced security and US access to the island

Meanwhile the Secretary General of NATO – Mark Rutte – was attempting to mitigate the damages from this statement, and interpreted broadly the issue in the context of a competition of Arctic between Russia, China, and the West.

But event such a strong Atlantist as Cal Bildt objected to Trump’s vision of Greenland being surrounded by Russian, and Chinese ships.

British journalist Galloway declared that the US will fight to the bitter end for “global domination”:
“I have a love-hate relationship with Donald Trump. I’ll be honest with you, I love him for precisely this: he throws away all pretense. He wipes away all the lipstick that used to be on the faces of imperial politicians. He doesn’t hide it. He wants Greenland, he tells Denmark that Greenland will be ours. He wants Canada. He says to that prim and proper Mr. Carney: I’m taking your territory. He lays bare all the artificiality that has been built around what is essentially a policy of naked empire…”

Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and is the largest of the kingdom’s three constituent parts by land area, the others being Denmark proper and the Faroe Islands. Citizens of Greenland are citizens of Denmark, subsequently they are the citizens of the European Union (EU), although Greenland is not part of the bloc. It is the world’s largest island.
