EU-Russia: Kallas vs.Ryabkov

Brussels 03.04.2025 Today at Informal Council of the EU Defense ministers the Hight Representative Kaja Kallas was pleased to announce the additional aid to Ukraine: “France has announced an additional €2 billion in support; Germany has committed up to €12 billion for the next years and Sweden has pledged €1.4 billion in military aid”.

“On the European Union’s side, we are prioritising providing 2 million rounds of artillery ammunition for Ukraine this year, as requested by President Zelenskyy.
“This is both realistic, but it is also achievable. We can do this together will all the European allies” she added.

Furthermore the Ministers discussed the modalities of security guarantees for Ukraine alongside the “coalition of the willing”. Kallas said that the EU has various opportunities, including funding Ukraine’s defence industry, expanding training programs for the military, and also tightening sanctions imposing pressure on Russia. The strongest security guarantee is a strong Ukrainian military, she concluded.

Responding to the “peace” initiatives of the West, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Ministe Sergei Ryabkov stated that the government is regarding the U.S. proposals on Ukraine seriously, but cannot accept them “just as it is.” According to him, the American position does not imply eliminating the root causes of the conflict, which needs to be corrected. Ryabkov also emphasized that Washington is not calling on Kyiv to “stop the war.”

“We certainly have a deeply and carefully thought-out set of our own priorities and approaches to this topic, which is being worked out and was worked out, including by our negotiating team at the recent negotiations with the Americans in Riyadh,” Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with the International Affairs magazine.

“We have not heard a signal from Trump to Kyiv about ending the war. All that exists today is an attempt to find some kind of scheme that would allow us to first achieve a ceasefire, in a way the Americans imagine it,” the Russian diplomat underlined.

“”At the core of what is happening is the desire of President Trump and his team to put into practice their famous slogan MAGA: Make America Great Again. It is clear that this slogan has already been tarnished and repeatedly attacked by the opponents of the current administration. Both within the United States and in different parts of the world. But the fact is the fact. President Trump has deep convictions and is determined to implement the doctrine of American exceptionalism by the means he considers appropriate, and there are a great many of them”.
