Kallas warns against trip to Moscow

Luxembourg 14.04.2025 During the press-conference following the Council of the EU Foreign ministers, the EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas warned against trip to Moscow on 9 May, which will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. According to the tradition, inherited from the USSR, the military parade on Red Square is an integral part of the celebrations. Kallas said that the acceptance of Kremlin invitation for Moscow celebrations will not be “taken lightly” by the EU. She did not specify the reprimands to follow. Neither did she present the legal base of her warning to the member-states, and the candidates countries. Taking into consideration the motto of the EU “Unity in diversity”, one can expect the acceptance of the variety of the political opinion, and inclusion of political diversity. However it doesn’t look like the case any more.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian government invited top European officials on May 9 to Kyiv in a gesture of solidarity against Red Square military parade.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha extended the invitation to his EU colleagues during the meeting in Luxembourg, calling them to “show our unity and resolve in the face of the biggest aggression in Europe since the Second World War.”

The Schuman Declaration, presented by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950, is considered the founding act of the European Union. It proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), where France and West Germany would unite their coal and steel production under a common authority.
