Brussels 14.10.2025 Ahead of the Allied Defence Ministers meeting at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on 15 October 2025, the updated information on the situation at Ukrainian battlefields revealed the dramatic amount of casualties Russian troops are sustaining.
We continue to see incremental Russian “games”, we assess that the collapse of the Ukrainian defence lines are highly unlikely on the short term, NATO senior official said. The situation in recent weeks has been quite dynamic; Russian ground forces likely seized about 250 km2 of the Ukrainian territory in September, which is a notable decrease from the approx. 465 km2 that the Russians took in August. The decrease is higly likely due to the significant relocation of the multiple Russian divisions along the frontline.
The average daily Russian casualties during September was 95O, a moderate increase from Russia’s August daily average casualty rate, but still relatively lower, than that what we saw in spring, and summer. Russia still has an extremely high casualty rate. We have seen around 1200 daily casualties in 2025, which now passed to 1,1M total casualties, with over 200 000 killed in action.
In recent weeks Russian forces are making gains Kupiansk, Eastern Zaporizhia, Dnipro, and Southern Donetsk oblast.

The BBC, together with Mediazona* and a team of volunteers, used open source data to identify the names of 134,125 Russian soldiers killed during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This data allows us to assess how the casualty rate changed at different stages of the war.
During the first year and a half, the casualty curve was undulating: after peaks—such as during the assault on Bakhmut and the capture of Avdiivka, when 100-150 people died per day—the number of fatalities dropped to 50-60 per day.
Since October 2023, daily casualties have been consistently high, only occasionally falling below 120.
Russia has likely sustained approximately 332,000 casualties (killed and wounded) in the Ukraine war so far in 2025, and approximately 1,118,000 casualties since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.https://t.co/rzaOVTfQyH pic.twitter.com/ksWpjbfPSD

Anything claimed by Ukraine (as well as MI6 and CIA) has to be treated with a great deal of skepticism. That total is much more than the number of known Russian troops in Ukraine to date.
