Russian circus bears permanent torture

After three days of the whine and howl coming from the bus in a the parking lot in Chelyabinsk, Russia, the pedestrians called the police to discover jammed in cages fox, raccoons, ferrets and pigeons. And in a cramped cage, the bear was beating his head against the bars. Prisoners shouted and whined, writes KP newspaper.

The most monstrous were the conditions of a bear. A large brown young bear in a crooked position sat in a cage with a meter and a half. Paws stuck out: they had no place to stay. Inside the crate is covered with a layer of manure. The curve of the aluminum drinking bowl, made from an old dipper, was empty. The other animals also had dried out bowls with no traces of water KP continues.

The owner of the bus, Pavel Radaykin, explained to the police that his troupe, Soyuz-Concert LLC, was registered in Penza and they were traveling from Orenburg on tour. In Chelyabinsk we stopped in transit. But Chelyabinsk is not on this route at all. Most likely, they were looking for a place to perform here, ”said veterinarian and animal rights activist Caren Dallakyan (Карен Даллакян).

But if there was at least one corpse in the ill-starred bus, a criminal case would have been initiated immediately. In the meantime, even the federal law “On Responsible Treatment of Animals” is powerless. We need bylaws, which impose a ban on the improper maintenance of animals”, – explained Dallakyan.

The bus with caged dehydrated animals left the city with all the tortured prisoners intact, while local animal rights activists admitted absence of detailed legislation to save zoo animals from apparent torture. Russian frame legislation concerning animal welfare protection was endorsed by Duma in December 2018, however in reality it offers too little or no tools to change ongoing horrendous abuses of wild animals in zoos and circuses across Russia.

Apparently the director of the travelling zoo Pavel Radaykin, a member of the General Directors Rating, ranks # 3 in the Art and Culture industry in the Penza Region as of April 30, 2019.

Thanks to the professionalism of Pavel Nikolaevich (Radaykin), the high-quality and responsible performance of official duties, dedication and leadership qualities, SOYUZ-CONCERT LLC has achieved significant success and has taken a worthy position in the art and culture market“,  according to the site of Art and Culture Industry.

The endemic corruption in Russia makes possible the advertisement of  Radaykin’s and alike circuses with at most perverse animal torture as “cultural” establishments, receiving subsidies of the Ministry of Culture, thus tax-payers support.

Easter transport massive lamb abuse

Yet again, lambs have been transported across the EU for days with no water, food, room to rest or veterinary care. An investigation by Animal Welfare Foundation sheds light on the systematic cruelties and violations behind the transport of lambs from Eastern Europe to Italy during Easter.

Every year during Easter, Italy imports tens of thousands of lambs for slaughter, mostly from Romania and Hungary. In 2018 Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF|TSB) and Animal Equality Italy released an investigation exposing the terrible conditions in which 800 lambs of only four weeks old were transported for at least 30 hours from Eastern Europe. At that time, AWF|TSB called the police, who fined the transporter 20,000 euros.

This year AWF|TSB teams investigated eleven trucks on 14-17 April, three of them in collaboration with the Italian police. Alarmingly, this latest investigation confirms that nothing has changed, and the story repeats itself.

This year, the three trucks inspected by the police and transporting about 2,400 lambs were fined about 15,000 euros for infringing the EU Transport Regulation (Ref. leg. 1/2005). Violations detected included overcrowding that impeded animals from moving and standing in a natural position, insufficient ceiling height, inappropriate drinking systems that cause dehydration, and incorrectly filled-in papers.

One of the drivers stopped did not even have the authorization to transport live animals, and another of the three trucks was from Hungary and had already been checked by AWF|TSB in 2018, 2017 and 2016, with the same violations recorded by the investigators in 2019. In a truck from Romania, AWF|TSB spotted a lamb that was laying on the ground, unable to stand and breath normally. Since the vehicle was lacking of emergency doors, the team of investigators was not able to help him and it was left on the truck, without any veterinary care, for transport to the slaughterhouse.

AWF|TSB will continue working with its lawyer to put pressure on the transporters, the veterinarians involved and the slaughterhouses.

A video of the investigation is available here.

Ukraine animal welfare activists appeal to MEPs

“Appeal of Ukraine animal welfare activists to
the Members of the Inter group for animal welfare of the European Parliament
February 14, 2019

Animal welfare and animal rights activists of Ukraine and compassionate citizens thank you for your support in saving wild animals from Igor Padalko zoo in Pokrovsk, Ukraine – the worst zoo of Europe.
We express special gratitude to Stefan Eck who reacted first to the problem of animal suffering and stretched his hand, we thank the chair Sirpa Pietikäinen, who took emergency measures to save dying animals, Anja Hazekamp, who provided an opportunity to raise our concerns at the meeting of the Inter group, John Flack, who was ready to go to Pokrovsk immediately, and his colleague Rupert Matthews, who took the sufferings of the animals close to his heart. We highly appreciate the support that you provided by responding to our petition asking for help, signed by more than 30 thousand citizens of Ukraine.
We felt your support and, apparently, the officials of the Ministry of Ecology, too, because after five years of the failed attempts, things started to move. Unfortunately, we have to admit that it would be irrelevant to talk about success, because the situation with a handful of animals saved from Pokrovsk zoo has not been legally or practically resolved yet.

The evacuation of animals at the end of December last year was canceled by the Ministry of Ecology, and around hundred zoo animals disappeared without a trace, including primates, wolves, foxes, raccoons, donkeys, llamas, a camel and rare birds. The old blind lion and two bears vanished, a young lion was starved to death From hunger the bears tore off their fur to eat it, it was a hideousness abuse. To date, 11 bears and five lions have been evacuated. The fate of other animals is unknown.
According to local residents, during five years, hundreds of animals died and went missing in the Padalko Zoo. On the territory of the zoo there are still exhausted horses and dogs on chain, who do not even have bowls, they just  lick snow replacing water and food.

The sad epilogue of the Pokrovsk zoo story is that  laws to protect animals can’t be implemented, and officials do not regard animal welfare as a serious matter, making efforts not to save animals, but to hush up the scandal. Veterinary examinations and transportation of animals of Pokrovsk were paid from donations of citizens of Ukraine, the Ministry of Ecology did not allocate a penny to the evacuation of the animals of Pokrovsk.
The evacuated animals are not microchipped, relevant documentation is missing.
Alas, according to the Deputy Minister of Ecology, Mr. Vasil Poluiko, there are 60 zoo in our country, similar to the Padalko’s concentration camp, subsequently the problem of keeping wild animals in captivity requires systemic resolution.

As you know, the majority of Ukrainian citizens choose the European path, so striving for European values is a sincere choice of people who do not want cruelty, they advocate for the emancipation of society, sharing humane views on harmonious coexistence with the other earthlings: domestic and wild animals.

In the absence of functional institutions and effective mechanisms for the protection of animals in our country, we consider the participation of MEPs in promoting the best European practices as a unique opportunity to reform our society in a meaningful way, bringing it closer to the European Union.
That is why we hope for your support of the civil society of Ukraine, which is committed to reforms, in particular, with regard to the welfare of animals, and their protection from cruelty.
We hope that Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty will be a subject of the EU Enlargement policy in negotiations with our government, which promises European way for our country.
We also hope that we will have the opportunity to personally meet with you and highlight the full range of problems faced by animal welfare movement of Ukraine. We are convinced of the importance of our cause for the emancipation and progress of society.

The story of Padalko zoo confirms: a human does not have two hearts, the animal abuser Igor Padalko was arrested accused of child abuse. The tragedy could have been avoided if five years ago the authorities had listened to the Pokrovsky animal welfare activists.

Animal protection is the protection of humanism. We hope that you can explain that to your counterparts in Verhovna Rada. They will not ignore your opinion as they ignore ours.”

The petition  to the European Parliament asking MEPs to save Pokrovsk zoo animals was singed by more than 30 thousand people. Please find further information on problems of Wildlife in Ukraine in groups #SaveUkraineBears #МишкиПокровск #LionDonetsk

Ukrainian minister plagued by lions abuse scandal

Ukrainian animal welfare and animal rights groups demand the resignation of the Minister of Ecology and Natural resources Ostap Semerak (pictured), after the international scandal broke out regarding the horrendous systemic abuse of wild animals in a private Zoo in Pokrovsk. The minister did not respond to an ongoing international campaign for liberation of the lions and bears from torture conditions in Igor Padalko private zoo, in Donetsk region. After three month of relentless efforts, more than 600 hundred complains from the Ukrainian citizens, the requests of renown international wildlife charities, Members of the European Parliament, and stars,  Mr.Semerak did not do anything to save the animals from the horrendous abuse, and ensure an adequate veterinary care.

The animal rights groups were indignant to discover that the lions jammed into rusty self-made cages, freezing to their own urine and feces, were fed by grain, and well as all the other animals in the zoo, disrespectful to their natural needs.

Mr.Semerak broke his promise to the citizens, and did not order the evacuation of the abused, exhausted animals to specialized sanctuaries, and rehabilitation centers, while they were ready to receive the lions and bears, and even organize the transport themselves.

Till present one more lion died, while denied treatment in a veterinary clinic, one more lion from Padalko zoo vanished, as some others, including two bears, who were sitting in cages without a possibility to stretch themselves.

Ukraine does not need the Minister of Nature, indifferent to it, tarnishing the image of Ukraine abroad, unresponsive to citizens, and disrespectful to European values, the activists say in a petition launched online, collecting signatures for resignation of Ostap Semerak.

The Minister does not comment or react to the appeals of the animal rights groups, deleting all the requests and comments on the Ministry sites. “It is useless to write to him, because he is useless. He does not want to serve Ukrainian people, he simply does not care. Semerak should resign!” activists write in Twitter micro blog.

Apparently the Minister has forgotten that his major task is to ‘serve the people of Ukraine’, as a an executive should in a democratic country.

The manifestation for saving the animals of Porkovsk, who are between life and death, will take place in Kiev next to the Ministry  of Ecology on 24th of January at 10:30-15:00.

Two escaped jaguars shot dead in Greek zoo

Two rare jaguars (Panthera onca) have been killed earlier this month after the escapade in Attica zoo near Athens. The animal rights groups are indignant about the incident, demonstrating the utter disregard of life of rare spices.

The incident happened earlier in December but it was only revealed through an announcement by the Attica Zoological park this week.

According to the announcement, the two big cats, named Jenny and Spotty, escaped their controlled area, triggering the security protocol.

The announcement says that there was no danger to visitors and the staff during the incident, but it does not specify exactly how the two animals escaped.

“While every effort is made to prevent the escape of potentially deadly animals, it is impossible to predict all possible circumstances, and occasionally, such animals do manage to leave their enclosures, causing a very real risk of injury or death to people in the vicinity” said the text of the statement signed by David Williams-Mitchell Director of Communications of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria  (EAZA).

The explanation of the killing given was that anesthesia cannot be effective with such animals has raised outrage in social media. Many Greek animal rights activists users cited the incident at a New Orleans zoo in July when a vet team sedated a jaguar that had escaped from its habitat and killed six animals.

Jaguars have the strongest bite force of all cats and they kill their prey by biting through the skull. They enjoy a good dip and are excellent swimmers. In fact, they typically live near water and have a taste for aquatic creatures. (Video above).

China Yulin dog meat festival – hell on earth

In spite of massive protests of animal rights activists worldwide Chinese Yulin dog meat festival takes place this week in in China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region, continuing the chain of the eight year unprecedented dog torture, launched in 2010, by local dog traders keen to boost their profits in a promotion event.

When first launched, as many as 15,000 dogs were killed during the core festival days, but Chinese and international pressure has seen this figure cut to about 3,000, although the figure does not correspond to the animal right groups goal to diminish it to zero.

“Earlier this week in Beijing, Humane Society International (HSI) handed over a letter signed by more than 235,000 people calling for an end to the annual Yulin dog meat festival.

“The letter was circulated by HSI and Care2 and supported by 87 Chinese animal protection groups, including Capital Animal Welfare Association, Zhejiang Animal Protection Association, and Hainan Small Animal Protection Association” – the HSI spokesperson said.

Many experts insist that only worldwide boycott of tourism to China is an adequate tool to stop the dog meat festival, because the losses will be much bigger than gains for local dog meat traders. There is a little hope the dog torture will stop, unless a coordinated international action takes place, the experts underline.

Yulin dog meat festival takes place from 21 to 30 June, ending in thousands of skinned and boiled alive dogs to biggest joy of Chinese visitors, appreciating freshly cooked dog meat.
