Russian Embassy in Kiev attacked

Russian embassy in Kiev was attempted to set ablaze by Ukrainian nationalists from a rocket launcher. A video of the incident was published by various TV channels. (Image: social media).

The missile hit directly the roof of the Russian Embassy, but apparently it failed to cause fire of the building. In addition, illustrating their aggressive intentions, the radicals have torn apart Russian flag.

The shelling of the building took place during an action of Urkaine radicals dedicated to the “Volunteer Day” when on March 14, 2014 first nationalist battalions began to form to participate in “anti-terrorist operation” in Donbass declared by President Poroshenko.

Sources in the diplomatic mission told Russian news agencies that in connection with the rally, reinforced groups of the National Guard of Ukraine were patroling the area near the building. In addition, after the shelling, they decided to go around the building and to assess the consequences of the incident.

Russian Embassy in Kiev sent the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine an official protest.

Ukrainian minister plagued by lions abuse scandal

Ukrainian animal welfare and animal rights groups demand the resignation of the Minister of Ecology and Natural resources Ostap Semerak (pictured), after the international scandal broke out regarding the horrendous systemic abuse of wild animals in a private Zoo in Pokrovsk. The minister did not respond to an ongoing international campaign for liberation of the lions and bears from torture conditions in Igor Padalko private zoo, in Donetsk region. After three month of relentless efforts, more than 600 hundred complains from the Ukrainian citizens, the requests of renown international wildlife charities, Members of the European Parliament, and stars,  Mr.Semerak did not do anything to save the animals from the horrendous abuse, and ensure an adequate veterinary care.

The animal rights groups were indignant to discover that the lions jammed into rusty self-made cages, freezing to their own urine and feces, were fed by grain, and well as all the other animals in the zoo, disrespectful to their natural needs.

Mr.Semerak broke his promise to the citizens, and did not order the evacuation of the abused, exhausted animals to specialized sanctuaries, and rehabilitation centers, while they were ready to receive the lions and bears, and even organize the transport themselves.

Till present one more lion died, while denied treatment in a veterinary clinic, one more lion from Padalko zoo vanished, as some others, including two bears, who were sitting in cages without a possibility to stretch themselves.

Ukraine does not need the Minister of Nature, indifferent to it, tarnishing the image of Ukraine abroad, unresponsive to citizens, and disrespectful to European values, the activists say in a petition launched online, collecting signatures for resignation of Ostap Semerak.

The Minister does not comment or react to the appeals of the animal rights groups, deleting all the requests and comments on the Ministry sites. “It is useless to write to him, because he is useless. He does not want to serve Ukrainian people, he simply does not care. Semerak should resign!” activists write in Twitter micro blog.

Apparently the Minister has forgotten that his major task is to ‘serve the people of Ukraine’, as a an executive should in a democratic country.

The manifestation for saving the animals of Porkovsk, who are between life and death, will take place in Kiev next to the Ministry  of Ecology on 24th of January at 10:30-15:00.

Ukraine: freezing zoo lion in critical condition

One of the abused lions in Padalko private zoo, Porkovsk, Ukraine, is in critical condition, the local animal rights groups reported. In spite of a strong international response the Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology did not react to save the abused animals from filthy conditions, and freezing winter temperatures. The inspectors confirmed the situation in the zoo does not meet a required standard, all animals are exhausted, and many of them are ill. The fences also do not meet the lowest security requirements, causing threat to public safety.

However the owner of the zoo Igor Padalko refuses co-operation with international charities, and does not allow local activists access to animals, although they reiterate their readiness to feed the animals, and also help to isolate the cages with straw, to help lions and bears to survive freezing temperatures without any shelter.

These animals continue to suffer and the government does nothing. The investigator in the case was changed so that this case can be drawn out for as long as possible. This creature “PADALKO” owner of this horror zoo is protected by someone” writes Lionel de Lange, from Lawrence Anthony Earth (LAEO) wildlife charity on his Facebook page. South African, Mr. de Lange came to save the lions from Padalko zoo horrid conditions, and evacuate them to SA sanctuary. He has previously successfully saved lions from of squalid conditions of Ukrainians circuses, transferring them to SA, to their natural wildlife park. But this time unexpectedly his plans were interrupted.

Reportedly all the evacuations of the animals was cancelled due to interference of the Donetsk governor, Alexander Kuz, who  is interested to receive solid state funds to reconstruct the zoo to offer it as an ‘entertainment’ for local children. The activists insist  that children in Donetsk region close to the front line (!), have other needs, and by no means the fading animals can stay any longer in degrading conditions.

However the question of confiscation of Padalko animals, and closure of the squalid camp, is more than about the respect of the wildlife. It is about the intention of President Poroshenko to reform Ukraine, and align the country with the European Union  (EU) norms.

The legendary Brigitte Bardot, and Stefan Eck, vice-president of the European Parliament Animal welfare intergorup (114 members) launched an appeal to President Poroshenko to keep his promise, and respect the EU  Lisbon Treaty Article 13, stating that animal welfare is a “European value‘. But their appeal stayed without response – nothing happened, 5 lions, 11 bears and around 100 other animals are dying from cold and malnutrition in Donetsk steppe icy wind, while Ukrainian authorities are ignoring their suffering, and distress of all those across the world, who care.

The reference to the European values is not a theoretical exercise, the drama of Padalko animals happens amid the reception of one billion euro of macro-financial assistance to Ukrainian government to ensure the implementation of reforms, lifting the country to European norms, and standards, also in the field of justice and public administration.

With Vice-President of the European Commission discussed the progress of reforms, the possibility of completing the current program of macro-financial assistance and providing Ukraine with a second tranche of 500 million euro in early 2019” Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman wrote in his Twitter mico blog

The question is why the European citizens should agree to transfer the second tranche of EUR500, if  the Ukrainian government,  judiciary and civil servants do not show a slightest respect the European values?

Russian Embassy cars vandalized in Kiev

Russian Embassy in Kiev has failed a complaint with Ukraine Foreign Ministry about damage to  diplomats’ cars which were vandalized, Russian media reports.

The vandals smeared diplomats’s cars with human experiments and scrawled insults with paint. Tires were punctured and license plates torn off.

The incident is not unique, as Russian diplomat’s cars have been vandalized in Kiev previously:

Donetsk independence leader assassinated in explosion

A key figure of self-proclaimed  Donetsk Republic died in an explosion at a cafe he owned in Donetsk city сenter, the local media reports.

Alexander Zakharchenko‘s assassination was reported by Donetsk news agency DNR.

There was no secret that  Zakharchenko has an argument with Kremlin, vividly criticizing Russian inconsistent policy towards self-proclaimed entities.

Authorities in the “Donetsk People’s Republic” have blamed previous assassinations of pro-independence leaders on the Ukrainian government, which repeatedly denies any involvement.

Some observers have attributed the deaths to infighting among the rebels, or moves by Moscow to eliminate inconvenient separatist leaders, who are not prepared to perform as puppets following ever changing geopolitical context.

Meanwhile Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling for an investigation, and expressing believe Kiev is behind the assassination.

There is no further information available on the number of victims perished in the blast, however the photos from the site of explosion circulating in the social networks show considerable damages to the building.

AMENDED:  Together with Zakharchenko the minister of budget of Donetsk Republic Alexandre Timofeev was transported to hospital intensive care. Names of two other victims of explosion remain unknown.

Moscow demands Kiev to investigate real assassinations not fake

In a comment on fake news, and a staged assassination of Kiev journalist Arkadi Babchenko Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) requested from Ukrainian   authorities to  investigate the assassinations of journalists, and activists happened in the past, instead of indulging in theatrical performances of doubtful effects. Moscow has also assessed the operation as a stir, with a purpose of creating a whirlwind of  a Russophobic sentiments.

“The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that journalist Arkady Babchenko is in fact alive and that his “murder” was nothing but an incident staged as part of a special operation. We are glad to hear that the Russian national is alive. However, we must point out the following” – the comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation says.

As a direct consequence of these actions, obviously designed to attain a certain propaganda effect, the entire global community, which quickly responded to the reports of a media representative from Ukraine, was in fact misled. Now we are learning the true motives for this staged incident that was apparently another anti-Russia provocation”.

“Right after the rumour was spread that Arkady Babchenko had been murdered, the Ukrainian Prime Minister and several other officials made statements in which they directly accused Russia of being involved in the murder. Now Ukrainian officials are planning to spin this Russophobic lie. According to the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Hrytsak, Ukrainian security forces detained a murder suspect who, as Hrytsak stressed, was allegedly recruited by Russian security services. SBU’s further action is clear. Naturally, they will continue to forment this provocation” – the comment continues.

The MFA is also reminding about the events in Odessa (2014, May 2), when  officially 48 people were killed, 250 wounded, however Member of Parliament from Odessa Vadim Savenko insists the real number of people burned alive in Trade Unions House amounts to 116. Throughout the fire, hundreds of local riot police were drawn up outside the building, but they mostly did not intervene to stop the massacre.

“Apparently, Ukrainian officials cannot find another way to demonstrate their performance other than to stage a murder instead of investigating actual crimes, including the murders of Oles Buzina, Pavel Sheremet and other journalists as well as the Odessa residents who were burned alive.”

“We have to state that, in Ukraine, matters of life and death and the trust of the international community in its policy are nothing but a bargaining chip in Kiev’s efforts to incite anti-Russia hysteria.”

“We are certain that our foreign partners and relevant international institutions will reach their respective conclusions” – the MFA comment suggests.

The fake news about assassination of  Russian journalist Arkadi Babchenko  caused a a wave of reactions, primary from journalistic community, but also from diplomats, and human rights activists. Reporters without Borders issued a special communiqué condemning deliberate creation of fake news by Babchenko as damaging to cause of mass media, combating desinformation.

Minsk II agreement re-launch in view

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Heiko Maas  agreed to attempt the re-launch of the efforts to solve the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where Russian-speaking population backed by Moscow, have been fighting Ukraine troops since 2014, triggering Western sanctions.

Maas suggested reviving the peace talks between Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia which led to the 2015 Minsk II agreement, unimplemented so far.

We are ready to consider this offer,” Lavrov said.

Maas  repeatedly called for “honest dialogue” with Kremlin, “particularly during difficult times.” He said that Moscow and Berlin had their differences but called for Russia to be included in global diplomacy. He admitted that the conflict in Syria “cannot be solved without Russia.”

Ahead of his visit, Maas said had that Germany was ready for that dialogue, but also expected “constructive efforts” from Russia, for example with regard to the conflicts in Syria or Ukraine.

Saakashvili march to impeach Poroshenko

More than 1,000 supporters of the Odessa Region’s former Governor Mikheil Saakashvili, who is also the leader of the Movement of New Forces, participate in a “march for impeachment” in central Kiev on Sunday.

The protesters gathered at about 13:00 Moscow time in a park to head for the central European Square, according to TASS News agency.

The opposing politician leads the protesters along the boulevard, which the police had blocked from traffic. The people are chanting: “Impeachment,” “No to corruption, No to Poroshenko,” “Impeachment instead of revolution,” “Kiev, stand up!”

“December 3 will be the beginning of ‘popular impeachment’”  – two weeks earlier Saakashvili saidBefore December 3, we promised to continue to do what we have started to do.”

“December 3 is Day X for all of us. Let us get organized. I will be travelling across the country to raise people peacefully” – Saakashvili announced. Apart from that, Saakashvili said he is ready to come at the head of Ukraine’s new government, if need.

“Ukraine urgently needs new authorities, a new government. We must form that government together. I am ready to do it together with you,” he said. “I am ready to take the leadership of this process with you, I am ready to come at the head of this government, if need be.”

Special status of Donbass prolonged

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) has passed a law “On creating conditions for a peaceful settlement of the situation in separate districts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions” extending the special status of the Donbass region by one year. However, it contains the provisions, according to which the special status will come into force only after “all illegal armed units and military equipment, along with militants and mercenaries” are withdrawn from these territories. The bill in this form was supported by 229 lawmakers (with 226 required votes).

The validity period of the Law on granting special self-government status to separate districts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions passed back in 2014 expires on October 18. It is the key document for a political settlement in eastern Ukraine. Representatives of the self-proclaimed Donbass republics have said on numerous occasions that the refusal to extend it will be tantamount to refusal to implement the Minsk agreements.

Having extended the special status for another 12 months, Kiev, nevertheless, added to the text of the law the reservation, which actually blocks its coming into effect until it gains full control over the region.

Having extended the special status for another 12 months, Kiev, nevertheless, added to the text of the law the reservation, which actually blocks its coming into effect until it gains full control over the region.

This effectively cancells all Contact Group negotiations on local elections in the Donbass region and the special self-government status as part of Ukraine’s constitutional reform and the agreement reached by the “Normandy Four” on the mechanism of enactment of the special status law in accordance with the “Steinmeier formula” (proposed by Frank-Walter Steinmeier who served as German Foreign Minister from December 2013 to January 2017).
