Russians diplomats demand apology

Italian Corriere Della Sera newspaper mistakenly pointed at a Russian diplomat among persons involved in the case of alleged Russian financing of the Lega party, the Russian embassy in Rome said. (Image: illustration St.Petersburg, Russia).

“The Embassy indeed employs first secretary Andrei Nikolayevich KharchenkoBu (born in 1987), who has no relation whatsoever to the individual with whom your journalists are trying to relate him,” the Embassy informed. “We would like to request an official refutation of information in the above-mentioned article (which is slanderous in essence) and to apologize to the Russian diplomat, who, just like all of us here at the embassy, is working for the benefit of Russian-Italian relations.”
In July, US news emitter BuzzFeed published a readout of a conversation between the head of the Lombardy-Russia Association and a senior member of the Lega party, Gianluca Savoini, and purported Russian businessmen about the party’s financing. The portal identified Russian participants in the talks as Andrei Kharchenko and Ilya Yakunin.

The First secretary Anrei Kharchenko has a different patronymic and is younger than the person identified by BuzzFeed.

Based on the publication and the audio record released by BuzzFeed, Milan’s prosecution have launched a case against Savoini on international corruption charges. Other suspects in the case are lawyer Gianluca Meranda and financial consultant Francesco Vannucci. All suspects denied any wrongdoing.

Salvini blames Brussels influences

Italian League party leader Matteo Salvini said the emerging new government of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) had been “born in Brussels to get rid of that pain in the neck Salvini“.  (Image: archive).

Today, “coincidentally”, the German ex-commissioner Oettinger speaks and says that Brussels is ready to do anything to help this government be born and reward it” he added.

Salvini added that Prime minister designate Giuseppe Conte “is the first member of the PD”, that “if they change the security and migrant decrees they’ll do Italians wrong”, and that the new government was “one of seats and posts, and I’m not giving up”.

Salvini predicts “long agony” of new government

Italy‘s  Democratic Party (PD) and Five Star Movement announced that they have agreed to form a coalition government.

We consider it worthwhile to try this experience,” the PD’s Nicola Zingaretti said after meeting the Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

It was agreed that Giuseppe Conte, who resigned last week, will return, and continue serving as Prime minister.

The upcoming government between Lega‘s former ally the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) caused the “dismay“, Matteo Salvini said after government crisis consultations with President Sergio Mattarella. It is likely it would be a reincarnation of the 2011-12 short-lived technocratic government of Mario Monti.

Mattarella must put an end to this indecent spectacle“, Salvini demanded. He added that according to the procedure we were rapid, precise, direct, honest to the hilt with President Mattarella to whom we expressed the dismay not only of the League but of millions of Italians with regard to the theater of the war for posts taking place for days” with the ‘horse trading‘ by the M5S and PD delegations.
Commenting on the recycled Prime minister Giuseppe Conte, Salvini said he got is post on “instructions from Paris, Berlin, Brussels, a Monti #2″.
“Some people were bothered by a government that was restoring pride, sovereignty and a future to Italian families”.
Salvini said that “60 million Italians are being held hostage by 100 MPs”.

The blunt truth is emerging that some hundreds of desperate parliamentarians are ready to do anything to avoid giving up their seats”, Matteo Salvini, the Lega leader said, while reacting on government gambit.

Wouldn’t it be wiser and more honest and decisive to let Italians vote and for five years have a solid, stable and coherent majority?“, he asked a rhetoric question.
The government that is about to be born will be weak, and desired in Brussels and Berlin. Mattarella asked for a government with a long prospect: tell me seriously, someone, if an M5S and PD government would have long prospects” – “It’s would be a long agony”, Salvini concluded.

Di Maio has decided to play a completely marginal role within a government #M5sPd , when he could have become premier on a proposal from #Salvini . Politically it’s suicide. But this agreement does not only mark the political suicide of #DiMaio , but of the entire MoVimento Italian philosopher Paolo Becchi wrote in his Twitter micro blog.

Salvini calls for snap elections

The League presented a motion of no confidence in Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in the Senate on August 9 after the party’s leader the Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, said that the ruling majority no longer exists and called for early elections.

According to the motion there were too many disagreement within the government, including the approach to Turin-Lyon high-speed rail link project: the 270-kilometer way would include a 58-km tunnel under the Alps mountain range, one of the longest tunnels in the world. Trains will run at an average speed of 220 km/h.

At present the EUR25 billion project is at risk due to the conflicting positions of the two parties backing the Italian government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, which has been in power since June 2018.

While the League is in favor of the project, though some officials raised concerns that Italy should rethink its financial obligation. The anti-establishment Five Star Movement is against major public works projects in general, believing they can be breeding grounds for corruption.

“Too many “no” are bad for Italy, which needs to grow and, therefore, to have new elections soon,” the League said.  “Those who waste time, and it is to detriment of the country and they are only thinking about their positions”.

A present thet Lega party is polling ahead of all other Italian parties at 38%.

Giuseppe Conte, the non-affiliated professor of private law, appointed by both parties to serve as the country’s Prime minister, said that Salvini must justify to parliament why he is calling for a new vote.

Salvini concerned by vd Leyen election

Italy Deputy Prime minister Matteo Salvini has expressed his concern about the election by the European Parliament of Ursula von der Leyen as European Commission president.
We saw a president of the European Commission indicated by Merkel and backed by Macron, Renzi and Berlusconi and the 5-Stars, leaning very far to the left on some issues like economic growth and border control, we are concerned,” Salvini said.

She passed by nine votes, it’s as if in Italy there was a PD-FI-M5S government, what change does she represent? “I’m proud of the coherence and loyalty shown by the MEPs of the League (in not voting for her” he added.

Fidesz reluctant to join ENF

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party Fidesz is reluctant to join far-right Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF) group in the European Parliament. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini’ and France big winner of the elections Marine Le Pen have launched the group in the European Parliament as the smallest in June 2015, however it has been gradually grown to 36 members. Due to successful elections in 2019-2024 Parliament the ENF group has grown to 58 seats.

We respect the Italian deputy prime minister and the Italian government and the result, which made the Lega Italy’s strongest party after the European Parliament election,” Minister Gergely Gulyas said.“Nonetheless, I see not much chance for a co-operation on a party level or in a joint parliamentary group”.

Previously Hungary Fidesz made clear it will not support EPP candidate for the European Commission president Manfred Weber after his pejorative remarks “insultingHungarian people.

EPP Manfred Weber said he would rather not be a president of the European Commission “if he needed the Hungarian votes for that.”
